Our City, our Money, our Future: The Bristol Pound

This coming May the Bristol Pound will be the first city-wide local currency in the country. Following a hugely successful media launch, where we announced the opening of our design competition, we have been receiving hundreds of emails from both national and international supporters. The competition invites anyone from around the city to enter a personal design with the chance of seeing it printed on one of our four bank notes. After the Bristol Pound goes live, these notes will then be in constant circulation around the city. The dramatic interest sparked by the launch of the competition has given us a big lift in showing us how much interest is out there for the scheme. The Guardian, Evening Standard and Telegraph are just some of the papers who have covered our story, as well as journalists from Spain, Italy, India and America, who have been contacting the Bristol Pound team requesting interviews and further information concerning the project.

In these last critical months before launch, we will be putting on a variety of events around the city, where we will be providing information and inviting members of the public to share their views on the scheme and learn how they can get involved. As a project developed for the community, it is essential that we have as much public engagement as possible. The events will be a space for anyone interested in the Bristol Pound, including potential traders, to come and not only have their questions answered, but to share their skills and suggestions. Already we have had four successful events with huge amounts of enthusiasm from the public. Each evening starts with a talk by the directors of the project, which is then followed by discussions in small groups. So far we have received a 100% support rate and commitment to the project.

We are trying to run as many events as possible, however, if you feel your community would benefit from a Bristol Pound event, then please do not hesitate to contact us.
