Bristol’s Big Issues is very lucky to be able to welcome two fascinating groups to talk about money: a fundamental mystery to most of us, but something intimate in our everyday lives.
Ben Dyson, from Positive Money, tackles a fascinating question: Where does money come from? He will tell you banks create it from thin air, by typing away on their keyboards. With a fascinating analysis of the financial crisis with money-creation at its heart, Positive Money think they have a simple solution, and it involves a radical departure from conventional economic wisdom and teaching. You may or may not be convinced, but there is no doubt you’ll come away more thought provoked than you’ve been in a while.
Speaking alongside will be representatives, including Mark Burton, from the Bristol Pound group, who hope to launch a local Bristol currency in the new year. The local currency movement is another response to the perceived failings of the existing financial system, and they’ll be explaining just what they think the Bristol Pound can do, and how it will work. A fantastic chance to clue yourself up months before the big launch.
Positive Money and the Bristol Pound group will also be in conversation with each other and the audience; can their solutions work together? Are they tackling the same problems? What other alternatives are there?
This will be a challenging and sometimes shocking evening. You’ll never think about money in the same way again. Don’t miss it.
Attend the FB event and invite others! The event is public and open to all.
