This Fairtrade Fortnight (28th February – 13th March), local environmental campaign group Sustainable Bishopston is inviting local people to create a buzz and join them for a Big Brew event to help raise awareness of Fairtrade and share a cup of Fairtrade tea or coffee and some delicious honey.
The Big Brew at Kings Tennis Club, off Kings Drive, Bishopston on Monday 28th February from 9.00am till 5.00pm is part of a national initiative by the UK’s leading fair trade organisation, Traidcraft, to host a Fairtrade tea party event any time during Fairtrade Fortnight 2011.
It is estimated that a third of the food we eat is pollinated by bees and each person in the UK consumes, on average, half a kilo of honey every year. However, the UK only produces about 12% of the honey it requires.
Traidcraft is aiming to raise £60,000 through Big Brew events to help beekeepers and honey producers in the developing world: people like Jabiri Nassaro, a beekeeper in Kenya. The money he earns from beekeeping means he can educate his children.
Jabiri says: “My daughter studies and does her homework by kerosene lamp. If I could make more money from beekeeping, I could provide light for my children to study. Without education there is no direction for them.”
Event organiser, Sarah Thomson, adds: “This event is a great opportunity to increase awareness of Fairtrade and the issues faced by tea and honey producers in the developing world. By serving Fairtrade tea, coffee and honey, raising funds for Traidcraft and encouraging people to buy Fairtrade honey, we are helping to make a difference to the lives of beekeepers. Sustainable Bishopston is immensely grateful to the local Co-operative store on the Gloucester Road for very kindly donating a large quantity of Fairtrade tea, coffee, cakes and biscuits. This will mean that even more precious funds can be sent to Traidcraft to support their valuable work.”

- Traidcraft is the UK’s leading fair trade organisation and has been pioneering fair trade since 1979. Traidcraft has been actively involved in making tea fair since the early 1980s and was the original UK pioneer of Fairtrade tea.
- Traidcraft began working with beekeepers more than 15 years ago. As well as Kenya, they also help beekeepers in Chile, Guatemala and Tanzania build better futures for themselves and their communities. Traidcraft’s new squeezy honey is from CIPAC in Guatemala, a cooperative they have helped to increase production and maintain high quality.
- Traidcraft’s charity, Traidcraft Exchange, works with smallholder farmers and workers, helping them to boost their incomes, make their voices heard by those who have the power to deliver change, and to be less vulnerable to price fluctuations.
